If you think that heading is promising something that is too good to be true, think again. Visiting New York City artist YiHsin wants to visit the homes of queer Aucklanders to do their household work and be photographed doing it.
YiHsin is currently working as an artist-in-residence at Auckland’s Unitec, where she will be working for the next three months. She has brought a unique disguise with her to help complete her travelling project, Yellow Mask, a performance-based art project.
“The intention of this work is to focus on many things,” says YiHsin. “Otherness, queer invisibility and the meaning of kindness, as well as create a new kind of ‘service aesthetic’ through extremely simple and mundane behaviour. “During the process, I will wear her special costumes and then offer various free services to anyone who identifies themselves as part of GLBT community.
“Please note: the whole process will be photographed and videotaped, but your privacy is protected. You can choose to be included in the photo or not. You have the right to check the pictures before they are published.” Whether or not you wish to be in the photos is up to you, says YiHsin. “It depends on the subject,” says YiHsin. “I have one project happening in New York where a gay guy wants me to watch him watch pornography! But most people are not in the photos and some even like to take photos of me.
“All the people are not professional artists and I am in their private space so they can choose to be in the photo and part of the project, or they can sit back and watch.”
YiHsin says, “Being an artist, I would like to use my art practice to progress social exchange and communication between art and society. So far, the artist had already done washing dishes, dumping trash, and whacking weeds. So, I try not to repeat the same services. Please use your creativity and tell me what you really want right now! “Everyone only has one time to enjoy the service. Feel free to visit my website or email me: www.yihsintzeng.com. I look forward to hearing from you, Kiwis!”
