A new gay show is waiting in the wings to take the stage, and it needs your help to make its grand entrance.

Introducing Day After Night, a new original New Zealand musical written and composed by Benjamin Cleaver.

It’s a pop rock musical love story about two gay men – Harry, a late night drag performer, has a dream. He wants a baby. His partner David can’t think of anything worse. David is more interested in the cute guy who serves him coffee. Blanche is an earth mother with performance ambitions. They’re searching for love in all the wrong places.

“With everything going on in the world around gay marriage and the quest for equal rights, and also something in New Zealand legislation regarding the adoption laws, I feel it’s a relevant story to be told now,” says Benjamin Cleaver, writer and composer.

Featuring fantasy, drag and caffeine, Day After Night is hitting Auckland’s Basement Theatre for a two week season this September. The organisers are using PledgeMe and Crowdfunding to appeal for support to help them stage the musical to its full and fabulous potential.

“Our company is called Theatre of Love, partly because what we do is out of love,” says James Wenley, producer and director of the show. “It’s very expensive to put on theatre, especially musicals… so we’re kind of crazy in that regard. So we’re asking for your support, if it’s an idea you believe in or show you’d like to see, please consider supporting us, because we can’t do it without your help.”

The team behind Day After Night believes that not enough original New Zealand musicals are being produced, particularly shows that feature a catchy, poignant and original musical score, camp flair and lots of heart. The show has legs, it just needs funding!

To produce Day After Night, costs of venue hire, marketing, lights, sound and fees for the professional cast and crew need to be covered.
