All those who support marriage equality are being urged to write to their MP and let their views be known via an easy-to-use website.
The site, www.marriageequality.co.nz, was originally set up to counter Prime Minister John Key’s May claim that there was no “clamour” for same-sex marriage in New Zealand.
The revamped site allows users to find their electorate, learn whether or not their MP supports marriage equality and send them an email by selecting pre-prepared statements or adding their own message.
“Marriage matters to gay people in similar ways that it matters to everyone. Gay and lesbian couples want to get married to make a lifetime commitment to the person they love and to protect their families,” the website reads.
“If you’re in a same-sex relationship, if you want the right to marry, if you are the family member or friend of a gay or lesbian person, now is the time to make your voice heard.”
Labour MP Louisa Wall told express on Thursday that the progress of the Marriage Amendment Bill rested on New Zealanders contacting their MPs and urging them to vote for the bill.
“Every single MP will need somebody to say to them, ‘Please support this because it’s fair, please support this because we don’t want to be treated like the other, please support this because all New Zealanders deserve equality’,” she said.
