Cruise lounge and sex store Basement is turning eight this year – an amazing achievement for an independent business that competes with the big boys when selling big toys.

Basement’s Neil Bartlett says, “We started in 2004 and originally were going to be at our current premises, but we missed out, so we found the premises in Norwich Street and set ourselves up.

“The six years went fast there but with increased overheads and the lease coming to an end we decided to find somewhere else. To our surprise, our original space was then available and we got it – 12 Canada Street. So in 2010, we moved.”

Basement’s cruise club is a little smaller than the original, which Neil says suits clients just fine, particularly on Sundays, when the place fills up for naked and underwear parties, or for monthly fetish events that cater to men and women.
