Lions, tigers and bears… OH MY! Bearracuda’s coming back to town!
Attention bears, cubs and unashamed bear-chasers! It’s time to come out of hi-bear-nation because the US’s wildest and most notorious travelling dance party for bears is coming back to Gay Road this Novem-bear!
Bearracuda’s come a long way from its days of happening in a dingy, underground club in the filthy bowels of San Francisco. These days, the event is celebrated as one of the biggest and most deliciously dirty parties for bears worldwide, with events happening across 30 cities including San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, NYC, London, Atlanta, Sydney and once again, Auckland! It was also voted ‘Best Club For Queer Men’ by the San Francisco Bay Guardian 2008-2011, so you know it’s gotta be good.
The party promises to be one hell of a bearapalooza and will be held again at K’ Road’s 4:20 Bar. Bearracuda will provide a sexy, beat-pumping atmosphere for bears to catch up with their buddies and to hopefully make some new ones!
Urge Bar owner Alan Granville says, “We are really happy to have such a local following from Auckland and across New Zealand and we have been amazed that so many overseas visitors are coming over especially for the weekend. We know of guys coming from Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and in fact three from San Francisco. There will even be guys there from as far away as Montreal, so we better throw them a big party!”
San Franciscan and famed resident Bearracuda DJ Steve Sherwood will be headlining the event. Steve has played at numerous San Francisco parties including Industry, Stallion Saturdays, Bears in the Dark, Disco Cherry, Bliss and more. In 2011 he became an international legend after playing a nine-hour underground set at Real Bad XXIII during Folsom Street Fair. Earlier this year, he played an upbeat seven-hour set at SF’s Play T-Dance to a crowd of over 700 people.
Joining Steve is local star DJ Luke James. Luke’s been playing around the gay scene in Auckland for over a decade with various residencies, including a regular spot at Urge. You can expect a slightly more underground style from Luke with a few divas thrown in, as he prefers his music to have an edge backed up with a solid beat. Luke’s excited to be spinning at Bearracuda as he says his experience at the 2010 gig was his favourite of the year.
The word on K’ Road is that attending Bearracuda is a bear necessity to all bears, cubs, bear-chasers and other assorted gay wildlife who like their men hairy and their music loud!
Bearracuda will take place at 4:20 bar on K Road on Saturday 10 November. Tickets are $30 in advance at Marcello’s Caffé (College Hill), Marvel Menswear (Ponsonby Road) or Urge Bar, while its $40 at the door. For online sales, www.iticket.co.nz.
