Come draw for express!

Come draw for express!

Are you that special breed of gifted writer and/or seasoned artist who can tell a gripping story with a single cartoon frame? Can you translate current events into razor-sharp, rib-splittingly funny socio-political satire with your unique blend of choice words and imagery? Could you represent the GLBTI family fairly while also turning the occasional mirror on our issues/actions?

express is looking for one great artist/writer/satirist to create a single-frame cartoon strip that will run in every other issue of express (basically once a month) in its own designated area of the magazine and online through gayexpress.co.nz.

The cartoons series will be completely inclusive, with characters representing or speaking about facets of the GLBTI community. Although the regular cast doesn’t need to represent each segment of the GLBTI rainbow, variety is ideal, a talking New Zealand animal is welcome and a bi-sexual presence would be appreciated.

The winning artist will be the subject of a feature column in the issue of express that launches the cartoon and will have their bio listed on the online contributors page with a link to their work. This artist will be responsible for developing the characters and providing the entire finished cartoon/text on deadline in the agreed-upon digital format.

Technical aspects of each cartoon:

  • Single frame 106mm wide x 100mm high
  • Bold black and white so they translate clearly onto glossy print
  • 300 dpi
  • Dialogue or text can be either designed into the frame or in a quote at the bottom but will always need to be the same for consistency

So, if you’ve got the outrageous humour and artistic gifts to bring our community to life through your comic, please submit your work for consideration by 01 March 2013 via email to editor@gayexpress.co.nz. Include your artistic CV and three sample of work that represent what we’re looking for (or links to them online) with specific emphasis on the wry, potentially dark wit we have in mind. The winning artist will be notified by 15 March, with the cartoon starting in early April.
