Sir Ian McKellen, who is currently in London, made a guest appearance at the opening of the Wellington Marriage Equality Conference yesterday, Friday 30 November, and hinted that he would like to get married in New Zealand.
Sir Ian, recorded a personal video which was played during the opening events of the conference in which he spoke of his support of New Zealand’s bid for same sex marriage.
“Ever since new Zealand gave women the vote before any other country in the world, the rest of the world has looked to New Zealand for social advance and here where are again, this time at the exciting prospect of the possibility of people of the same gender being able to get married” he says in his video.
He goes on to say, “I hope that by the time I get back to Middle-earth I might even be able to get married there.”
Sir Ian has spent extended periods of time here filming The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit during which he has grown extremely fond of New Zealand.
