Wellington 2011 Inc., the organiser of the 2nd Asia Pacific Outgames held in Wellington in March 2011, have made a $1500 donation to Rainbow Wellington to help fund the participation of a young Wellingtonian at the Human Rights Forum which will be held as part of the 3rd Asia Pacific Outgames in Darwin next May.
Rainbow Wellington have been utilising their income to support a wide range of community events and projects over the years and in 2011 made a substantial contribution to the Wellington Outgames.
The Outgames bring together lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex athletes from around the world in unprecedented numbers for a celebration of sport, culture and human rights. In the spirit of true inclusiveness, the Outgames are open to all, regardless of sexual orientation.
Each Outgames has a sport component offering eight to ten sport disciplines at the ‘Continental’ level and 30-35 sport disciplines at a ‘World Outgames’ level.
Cultural activities include music, dance and social activities such as country and western dance, marching bands, concert bands, big bands, colour guard, cheerleading, choral festivals and leather events to name a few.
World Outgames also plays host to an international forum on GLBTI Human Rights, where delegates from every continent come together for workshops and discussions led by internationally respected leaders in human rights, researchers, legal scholars and trade organisations.
The upcoming Human Rights Forum in Darwin will bring GLBTI people from the Asia-Pacific region together to share their experiences, struggles and to insights on how we have influenced social change.
Amongst other things the forum aims to increase awareness of and highlight critical human rights abuses within the GLBTI community across the region and it is hoped that the forum will provide the opportunity to build a mentoring/leadership program with a focus on emerging leaders.
The 3rd Asia Pacific Outgames will be held in Darwin from 10 – 16 May, 2014. Find out more at www.darwinoutgames.com.au. For information on the Rainbow Wellington grant email email@example.com.
