Grady Elliott, the owner of gay bar Legend on Karangahape Road, says he has had to close the bar due to earthquake strengthening work that is being done by the building owner.
Work has already started. A new apartment building is also to go up at the back of the existing building.
The new space will encompass an open area deck plus other layout changes and Elliot says there is a chance Legend will move back in once the work is complete. In the meantime alternative suitable spaces are being considered.
Drag artist and entertainment manager Tess Tickle told express that people who purchased tickets to see the travelling troop of drag queens from Ru Paul Drag Race can rest easy as the event is still going ahead at nearby Encore cabaret and restaurant.
