School students at a Brazilian high school both male and female arrived dressed in skirts to support a fellow trans* student who had been reprimanded by school officials for wearing a dress herself.

A group of class mates staged protest at São Cristóvão do Colégio Pedro II in support of Maria Muniz, who, nine days previously had been handed a fine by a teacher for wearing non-regulation ‘boys’ uniform.

Muniz has only recently came out as Trans, the 17 year old told local reporters, ‘For me, wearing a skirt was about expressing my freedom over who I am inside, and not how society sees me,” she continued to say, “I am really happy about the way my classmates supported me and hope it serves as an example to others to feel encouraged to do the right thing. I was always taught at school to accept who you are. I am only trying to live that.”

The school has since backtracked and posted this to its social media account in support of their student’s plight.
