AUT has made another forward step in being one of, if not the most, LGBT+-friendly university in New Zealand. It has set a goal that this year, all campuses will have all-gender bathrooms, so non-binary and trans students can feel comfortable going to the toilet whilst on-site.

This comes off AUT’s massive float at the Pride Parade and stall at the Ending HIV Big Gay Out. AUT is also New Zealand’s only Rainbow Tick certified university.

AUT Rainbow Community Manager Audrey Hutcheson aims to work for change from within the University and is leading the fight for gender neutral toilet facilities saying “It’s about human rights, safety, and equitable access to basic needs.”

Hutcheson says improving the bathroom facilities is part of a number of changes made by the University in an effort to support gender-diverse students.

As one our team said, “maybe they should start calling themselves GayUT”.
