Even though the Trump administration has been systematically stripping trans students of their rights, New York City has taken a stand and issued an guidance saying that teachers must refer to students by their preferred pronouns.

By preferred pronouns, the guidance says that it goes beyond the normal binary ‘he’ or she’ and to include ‘they’, ‘ze’ or other pronouns. In addition to this, students do not need parental consent or court orders in order for them to be able to request which pronoun they prefer.

Schools must also maintain their records to reflect the students’ gender identities, and issue student IDs in accordance with them.
