The Transgender Day of Remembrance is being marked around the country this weekend and is an opportunity for communities to come together and remember those who have lost their lives.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance occurs annually on 20 November and is observed around the world. It is a day set aside to mourn and honour those who have died as a result of violence and raises awareness of hate crimes against trans and gender diverse people.

Trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith first started the day following the death of Rita Hester, who was murdered on November 28, 1998. Holding a vigil the following year, commemorating all trans and gender diverse people who were killed since Hester’s death, the tradition has carried on every year since.

Over the past year, 325 trans and gender diverse people were reported murdered across the world.
